After 30 film festivals, 3 traveling shows, and 14 different countries it has finally made its way to Comic Con. You have two chances to see it on a big screen this Con.

Wednesday Night

So I was out late on Wednesday night walking my dog Riley. It has been getting super foggy at night so I have started bringing my Mag light with me. In the fields the fog gets so thick that the flash light beam turns into some kind of lightsaber. It is pretty fun until you decide to pretend to cut down a near by tree and get the crap scared out of you by a possum.
P.S. My dog is a complete waste....one look at the possum and he actually runs away leaving me and nine thousand needle teeth alone in the dark. Awesome.

Goonies Charity Art Auction and Screening! Sat Nov 15th!

Announcement! On Saturday, November 15th The Those Guys are putting on a charity screening of the classic movie "The Goonies" at the Rialto Theater in South Pasadena. Admission is FREE, and we'll be accepting donations at the door. The night will include a raffle (including Sean Astin-signed movie stills, DreamWorks and Nickelodeon Animation schwag and much more!) and 80's kid movie themed art auction. It all benefits "Donors Choose" a charity that buys art supplies for classrooms around the country.

The auction starts on Monday November 10th at ttgcharity.com and will finish on the night of the event, so if you have to have one of the pieces be sure to make it out to the screening so you can outbid your competition.

Hey gang, come and check out a new gallery show opening this Saturday August 23rd, 7pm at Titmouse, Inc. Israel Sanchez, Richard Pose and I will all have work in the show, alongside Dave Johnson and Gabe Swarr among others. My tribute to Gygax (creator of Dungeons & Dragons) includes a nod to the Monster Compendiums, used by Dungeon Masters in the mid-eighties. I remember getting an edition as a gift with the many-eyed BEHOLDER monster on the cover. For super-geeks out there, the BEHOLDER made a guest appearance in another eighties classic, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA.

The show runs through Sept. 27th.

The comma free "Great Great Grand Show" opens this Saturday at Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra. The show will feature new historical themed paintings by Scott Campbell, Jon Klassen, Graham Annable, and me, Israel Sanchez. Graham is going to premiere a new animated short called "From Whence Before Times" at the opening. I did this drawing last night at Sacramento's Pompsicle life drawing sessions. It is every Tuesday at 6 to 9 pm at the Brick-a-Brack gallery on P-St off of 21st. I've been going to this for awhile now and been having a blast. After not life drawing for about 3 years....yes I can admit it now....I've started back up. Feels great. Also Pompsicle is costume themed life drawing which is way more fun then plan old naked life drawing.

A while back I was contacted by a woman named Wendy. Her sister Becky, has a daughter named Sarah. Sarah was going to have a baby around May. I was given the requirements of "they LOVE sock monkeys!". Well what else was I going to paint? So I did some sock monkey research and came across some very interesting and bizarre ones, but I got the general idea. So I plunkered down and came up with this. Annecy International festival of Animation 2008

So I'm back from my week in Annecy, Fr for the Animation festival. I had a blast! It is true what everyones says about Annecy. The Food,the Festival, the films, the f-scenery, and the friends are all top notch.

Mari and I got there on Saturday and went straight to our hotel after picking up our badges and the 500 lbs. of programs and advertisements. Our Hotel was paid for by the festival and was right on the Lake(such a beautiful view).

We met up with Dikki and a group of the most talented and super cool locals. Shout out to Bannister, Flo, Mathilde, Corentin, Ben, and Jean-Phillip. You guys rock. Ok so now Mari and I had a crew and we were ready to start the festival.

I hadn't really thought about it until I got there but there is waaaaay too much animation for you to see. A week is not enough to cram it all in so we dicided to narrow our schdule a bit. This is what we saw...

Short films in Competition #1:Our favorite were...

"KJFG no5",super simple but probably the funniest short of the whole festival.

"La Maison en Petits Cubes", this one won the Annecy Crystal for best short. It was so good it made Mari tear up a little.

Short films in Competition #2:I was in this one...

"Let Them Grow!", I met the director, Christelle Soutif, who was super nice. She had a really cool Clay/Affect effects technique she used.

"Keith Reynolds Can't Make it Tonight", Also met the director, Felix Massie, who is one of four directors who had shorts at Annecy this year all from a studio ,ArthurCox,in Bristol. He also used Flash and I think we were the only two in the whole competition who did.

"Chepogi", Super cool Russian folk tail with a happy ending. Beautiful with a neat cutout animation style.

"Styri", I met the director and producer to this film too. Ivana Sebestova and Ivana Zajacova from Slovakia. We ended up bumping into each other a couple times during the festival and went to the closing ceremonies together. Their short was also awesome about four womens lives that cross paths and interconnect in different ways.

Short films in Competition #3:

"Portraits Rates a Sainte-Helene", A film about Napolean and his portait.

"John and Karen" by Matthew walker, another director from ArthurCox.

"My Little Angel", Funny short with violence toward puppies, But in a funny way.

Short films in Competition #4 :

"Kuygorozh" another amazingly good looking short from a Russian director.

"Operator" This was Matthew Walkers second film in competition. I thought this one was really funny. Good dry humor in animation hits me on the funny bone.

"Paradise" I love the way this one looked. Well done. Oh and I think Dave Foley from "kids in the Hall" did a voice on this one.

"Skhizein", This one was a french film that everyone liked. Good concept, done well, and not to long. Really good.

We also got to see a super sweet presentation of two Disney shorts and the new Pixar short. Awwwwwwesome! All three were really good. The goofy one was super funny and worked totally well in 2D. That was good to see again. "Glago's Guest", which I had never heard of before, was great! And of course Pixar knocks another one far out of the park with "Presto". What was really nice is Doug Sweetland had a really interesting presentation after about how he had to pitch and re-pitch and re-pitch the boards to the Pixar brain trust, until he got it right. I really related to his story cause I went through a really similar thing with Chris and Shannon when I was pitching "Owl". I love how those Pixar guys really open their shirts and let you see how hairy their chests are. Most companies try and keep their mistakes and process secret, but it is a totally helpful to hear how they go through making this stuff.

After that we saw a whole grip of features
"Nocturna" Good 2D!
"Appleseed: Ex Machina" CG Anime.
"Go West, A Lucky Luke Adventure" It was like a super good Animaniacs feature length episode. Funny.
"Dragon Hunters" Mari said she liked it and can't wait for it to come out in english.
"Idiots & Angels" Another weird one from Plymton. I'm glad he is back to the colored pencils.

And like a genius I missed "Sita Sings the Blues" a feature by an american who uses Flash and won the Crystal for best feature.

So on Wednesday I had my premiere in the Grande Salle(a huge 1000 seat plus theater). The theater was packed to the gills and the crowd was throwing tons of paper airplanes before the show(an Annecy tradition). I can't tell you how cool it was to sit in an audience of that many people and watch something you did on a super huge screen. It felt really good, and to top it off they cheered at the end. Aaahhh I was in heaven. After each film they brought up the lights and if the director was there he/she ran up on stage and took a bow. I ran up with Mari's camera and took this blurry shot.

Earlier that day Dik, Bannister, and Corentin, all had a comic book signing out front of the local comic book store. (french comics....drool) They seemed to have a good time. You'll have to ask Dik for more details on that since I took the opportunity to ditch them and go eat more French food with Mari.

On Thursday we all took part in the Sketch Crawl. Bannister and Dik lead about 60 artist through the old town drawing the whole way. It was a blast and I got to meet a whole bunch of artists from all over England. (really nice all of them)

All in all it was a great week. My favorite part was probably the people. It was awesome being in a place with so many people all jazzed about seeing good animation. Can't wait to finish my next film so I can try and convince Annecy to let me come back again.

UC DAVIS Life drawing club

I have been taking part in this new Life Drawing Club up at UC Davis. The members are cool, the atmosphere is relaxed, and the models are nude. What more could one ask for. I'll be honest with everyone. I think it has been something like three solid years since I did any life drawing. I know I know. But now that I have started up again man it feels great. I didn't know I had missed it so much.

Here is another character that I've been working on. He shows up in shot #06. He doesn't do much but I had a heck of a time getting all those shell colors to animate. I think there is a level of detail when it comes to animated characters that may be just too much. Lesson learned. On to the next shot.

Much of the inspiration for the animation style came from a cycle test of a turtle walking I did awhile ago. It worked, so I decided to up the complexity of the characters. The original can still be seen on YouTube.

I realized that the giant looked too much like a giant kid and not enough like a monster. So I changed his design a bit but still kept him goofy looking.

Here's a Photoshop color comp for a new painting. I want to come up with a story about a kid who brings a two headed monster to show and tell, hopefully this gives me some inspiration.

Also, the "Cereal Killers" book was recently mentioned on Newsweek's blog and on Drawn.ca. I can't wait to see the finished book.

I'm still hard at work but I though I might post a little something that I was working on today. This is a Grasshopper that makes an appearance in shot 23 of my film. I got the idea for having him in my film one day I was out location scouting. I found a beer bottle on the side of the road that was full of these dead grasshoppers.

The bottle was probably thrown from a car and landed in the grass. Since it was the desert I think they all must have gotten trapped inside looking for something to drink. I thought it was interesting so I poured out a pile of exoskeletons and took a picture.

This months issue of Guitar World Magazine features a guitar lesson from Skwisgaar from the show Metalocalypse. The lesson is on a free CD packaged with the magazine. Mike Roush animated all 5 minutes and 36 seconds of it. Most of the lesson centers around the fret acurate animation that has become a halmark of the shows animation. The lesson will also be a special feature on the Metalocaypse DVD due to release on OCT 2nd.

Packed and Loaded Preview

The group show "Packed and Loaded" opens next week on Tuesday the 19th. I'm busy touching up the paintings and cutting mattes. Opening night is from 7-10pm and the show will include work by eight artists all together. This is my first time showing at Gallery 1988, so I'm excited. I hope to see you there.

Two Color Comps

The "Packed and Loaded" show is coming up fast, I have three more paintings to get done. Here are the color comps for two of them.

I painted the tree illustration in Photoshop first then I made this small gouache version to make sure that I could mix the colors correctly, I've been having trouble matching colors from my monitor to the final piece so I've been adding this step in between. Also, in the final, there'll be a little guy sitting up in the tree playing a guitar.

Thanks to Chris Duffy and Dave Roman at the magazine for making sure the story was the best it could be. And thanks to my fellow "The Those Guys" for giving me advice as I tweaked the story, especially Mike Roush who helped me come up with an ending that tied it all together. So as of Sunday, May 20th, 2007, The Those Guy, Ry-Ry Hernandez, is officially off the meet market. He is now locked in the deadly jaws of holy matrimony with his lovely wife Vanessa. Gallery Work

The line drawing and Photoshop color comp are for two recently completed paintings for the upcoming group show at Gallery 1988 called "Packed and Loaded".

The "River Giant" goauche painting is for next month's "Power In Numbers" show at Nucleus. The show will include 5x7 paintings by a ton of artists including fellow TTG's Matt Spanger, Richard Pose, and Justin Ridge. Part of the proceeds from the sale of the paintings will go to benefit breast cancer research. From the few paintings I've seen I can tell it's going to be a great show.

Owl Sculpture

This is a picture I took today of a maquette I made of a Burrowing Owl. I made it with Chavante, armature wire and two teddy bear eyes. He is perched on a small block that represents the post of a barbed wire fence. I love sculpting, especially when I get seriously burned out with drawing or animating.....It seems to bring me right back.

One painting down. Here is the color comp for the next one. I made a few pencil sketches, but I didn't figure out a composition I liked until I took them into Photoshop. The challenge is to make the lasers and red guy's face pop against the surrounding colors.

I've been invited to participate in a group show at Gallery 1988 in Santa Monica opening on June 19th. Here's a color comp for the painting I'm working on right now. It's a redo of a painting I did last year that I recently realized wasn't as strong as I had originally thought.

Hey! Check it out! I am on the special features of a dvd! Kinda cool, I wish I would have had better things to say other than "Mike Mignola is cool"... but they didnt give me much time to prep.

The studio I work at, Titmouse Inc, directed and boarded the show... I was a huge fan of the comic, and I kept bugging my boss to let me work on it in any capacity... At first he only let me be the in-house "Mignola expert". He would ask things like "Does this look like something Mignola would do?" and I would answer... I was the one to help approve the image above, used for posters and the dvd cover (I know its a small task, but I am pretty proud that they gave me a small role on the show)... then later they let me do some drawings for the intro... Persistance pays off, sometimes. I got on the dvd featurette, but not in the show credits... oh well.

Animation Competition

So a long time ago Justin and I realized that animating to music is the best thing ever. So we decided to do something about it. Justin loves to make music on his computer and I love teaching Justin how to use flash so...... We decided to start up an animation competition between the two of us. Here is how it works. Justin makes a 30 second clip , some funky grove, then we high five and each start to animate our own video to that music. Then when we are both done we show each other and see who won and who didn't win. Then we do it again....

"Super Hero" Illustration Friday

Happy New Year!
I haven't done this (Illustration Friday) for a while and I didn't really have time to color so i did a quick pass at it. This idea just kind of stuck me as funny! I remember as a kid I would do this and pretend I was flying. Until the day my face got too low and it slid on the dirt below...that was not fun! This makes me think about how now a days parks are WAY to kid friendly. What ever happened to Dirt, Grass & Asphalt. You know stuff that can hurt you but not kill you. Now the ground is all rubber and the play sets are plastic...back in my day they were metal. Remember sliding down a HOT metal slide...man those were the days!

"Imaginary Spaces" Comp

Here's the color comp for a painting for the upcoming "Imaginary Spaces" show at Gallery Nucleus next week. The idea is to create a painting of an imaginary world without any characters in it. This comp shows the basic shapes that make up a forest of tree shaped castles, the final painting has alot more detail. I'll post it soon.

Weekend film shoot

Just got back from this last weekend's film shoot. Dik came this time along to help. Thanks again Dikki. The Prynoski's made sure I was on top of everything, and Steve Kellner (of Animation Meat fame) helped and took this dope picture. Started off slow with a two hour delay because of a foggy morning but later in the day we got a lot of good stuff. Didn't get everything so we will have to make a second trip. By the way, remember to drink water. Dehidration is nothing to laugh at. All in all it was a good day.

Hi there I just recently had gotten the chance to catch up with the Famous TTG Chicken this week! I am doing a report on "Poultry in the Workplace" and discovered that THE TTG Chicken has a second job as a Administrative Tax Filing Consultant. Here is the interview:

Yes very much so, we are all part of the same coop!

How long have you had this 2nd Job?
Well being a TTG doesn’t pay the bills…so I felt I had to spread my wings a bit. That was 8 months ago!

No I will just ask for time off. I just don’t want to put all my eggs in one basket.

"SMOKE" Illustration Friday

Well here I am once again, this week was kind of hard. I have been sleep deprived and just overall slow going. I got this idea from my girlfriend Vanessa...She suggested the guy from Alice in Wonderland smoking! So once again I did most of the work during my lunch hour from work. I have been working on my coloring skillz, I'd say it is my weakness but I will keep pluggin' away at it until I get it right.

DAY 4 NIGHT

LATELY I am doing a lot of outdoors photography. I really wanted to get some good night shots but have been so far, unsuccessful. Then last week I was watching LOTR, TWO TOWERS and there is a part where Legolas and Aagorn are talking about the impending battle late at night. The shot looks real cool because it seems as if the moon is super bright and is lighting up the entire landscape with an erie blue glow. So I tried my own day for night version of one my own raw daytime photos. Hurray Photoshop!! Must do more.

"WIND" Illustration Friday

Well it is that time again! Here is my idea for Illustration Friday. I changed the composition a few times and am trying new stuff with color...Like coloring the lines and not just leaving them black. It been such a challenge trying to do these between work and all, but in the long run it really pushes me to be creative and not just go home and sit in front of the TV!

Well here is my entry for Illustration Friday. It's a take on the "Ghost Hunter" TV shows, where people pretend they hear and see ghost. I personally can't watch it cause I get to scared. Kinda' like when I HEAR the "Unsolved Mystery's" theme song I just get all freaked out. That's right I am a 29 year old beast of a man scared of ghost, monsters and especially aliens!

That said my fellow TTG Richard Pose directed me to the website/blog "Illutration Friday" , where they give you a topic each weeka nd you do a drawing on it! Well here is my first go and the topic was "Smitten". I sketched and inked and colored during my lunch hours this week off and on. The Premiere of METALOCALYPSE is this Sunday.
For those who aren't in the know. Dik and I work at a studio in Hollywood called Titmouse. We have been working on a new show for [ADULT SWIM] since January. The show is animated in Flash and is about a metal band, more popular than the beatles, that goes around the world in their giant dethcopter breaking stuff. Check it out.

It is on Sunday at 11.45pm on [ADULT SWIM] right after "Robot Chicken" on Cartoon Network.

Dudley and Nestor finally premeires

Hey everybody! I would like to announce my book of Comic Con 2006. This year instead of a normal everyday sketchbook I decided to make an animated sketchbook. I call it Flip-o-scope. It is a 60 page flipbook with two animations inside. The first one is a monkey chasing a butterfly and on the other side is a prizefighter boxing a kangaroo. Can't wait for Con!
